Signs Of A Flea Infestation

Even adult fleas only reach around 1-3mm in length, meaning it can be incredibly difficult to spot fleas. Other signs of flea activity include:

  • Excessive Itching: If you notice you or your pet scratching more than usual, then this is the first sign of fleas. It’s not a guarantee, as there could be other causes, but look out for other signs of fleas just in case.
  • Flea Bites: Flea bites look like raised red welts, and are usually found on the exposed skin on areas such as the neck, hands and legs of humans.
  • Black Specks On Furniture Or Bedding: Small black specks on your bedding could be flea droppings, also known as flea dirt. They could also be blood from where you’ve rolled over onto fleas during the night and crushed them.
  • Small White Specks: If your animals or pet bedding is dark in colour, you might notice tiny white flecks, like grains of rice. These could be flea eggs.

If you notice any of these indicators and think you might have a flea problem, then you need to act fast. Fleas won’t go away on their own, and they breed quickly, meaning what starts as a minor issue with one pet can soon spread and become a major flea infestation affecting your whole household or business.

For our commercial pest control clients, Arrow Pest Management offers ongoing support, so we can catch flea infestations and other pest problems before they get out of hand.

Flea Control FAQs

Can You Get Fleas If You Don't Have Pets?

While it is less common, it is possible to get fleas if you don’t have any pets. Fleas can also enter your space through contact with contaminated humans, wildlife, or even inside used clothing or soft furnishings. To protect your home from fleas and reduce the risk of getting an infestation, it’s recommended that you vacuum any used furniture and wash any secondhand clothing on a high heat before you start using it.

What Kind Of Fleas Are Found In The UK?

In the UK, there are several species of fleas found, including cat fleas, dog fleas, human fleas and bird fleas. While they are named after their preferred host animal, most flea species will bite other animals and draw blood to feed. So, if you find cat or dog fleas in your home, they may still bite you and your family.

Do DIY Flea Products Work?

Flea powders and sprays that are available to the general public are not usually strong enough to be effective against fleas. If used incorrectly, they often don’t kill all adult fleas, larvae and eggs, meaning some will remain dormant for up to a year before returning. Some of the chemicals in these products can be toxic and cause health issues for pets and children. That’s why the safest solution is to work with experts like Arrow Pest Management.
